From Petrol station to Food store. Co-op’s expansion plan for their ‘Food’ stores has gathered momentum and ASR Projects were contracted to build one of their latest stores on the site of an old petrol station. Working closely with Dewis Architects ASR Projects turned a derelict dis-used site into a smart modern convenience store for the local community of Pen-Y-Groes – From petrol station to Food store – just a different kind of fuel.
From demolition to rejuvenation
ASR Projects employed local skills to work with and along side ASR’s lead team for the duration of the project. The project build commenced in July 2018 and was completed in January 2019. We worked closely with Vale Consulting on all engineering aspects of the build ensuring the exacting attention to the detail was applied throughout the construction phase.
The Project involved the demolition of the existing petrol station and the ground was cleared of all bio-carbons and made ready for new construction. Initial foundations involved piling and a deep re-enforced raft foundation. The envelope was a steel portal frame in-filled with traditional block wall masonry construction and steel cladding. We installed large glass curtain walling and automatic doors. The roof was a flat roof system by Fatra and the Ground-works involved creating a new car park, lighting, signage, and drainage systems. The project had a number of challenges and one our biggest was the weather and the constant driving rain – we don’t think we’ve ever worked on such a wet site.
The detail – Naturally modern
The concept for the store was kept to a simple smart design bringing in the contrast of two materials to the exterior, natural timber and dark grey steel cladding. The architectures aesthetic works well within its environment having an inviting warm character important for the client and its customers – naturally modern, naturally Co-op Food.
